Welcome to Matiaburj College

The history of Matiaburj College can be traced back to the Pre-independence era when a society, Matiaburj Educational Society, was formed in 1923 with the objective of establishing a high school which would later be developed into a full-fledged college. In this connection, the society got the possession of a piece of land donated by Clive Jute Mill and a school was duly established called Matiaburj High English School, presently Matiaburj High School. The school started functioning in a 'tin-shade' and got recognition from the University of Calcutta w.e.f 01.01.1924. The present building of the school was constructed in 1942 with the help of generous contributions from the people of the area.

In keeping with the objective of developing the said school into a full-fledged college Garden Reach Evening college was established in 1963, but had to be closed down due to some technical reasons. However, in the meantime Harimohan Ghose College was established in 1964 in the area. The dream of a college remained elusive but the people concerned never left hope and worked effortlessly for the purpose.

In the same vein, the site of Sekhawat Building was bought, which presently houses the building of Matiaburj College, and the same was registered in the name of Matiaburj High School, since the whole initiative was by the school-staff, administration and alumni of the school. A signboard reading "SITE FOR MATIABURJ COLLEGE" was duly installed in the premises. In 1991, the old structure which was in a crumbling state was dismantled with the permission of Calcutta Municipal Corporation under the supervision of the police and the school administration. From, that time onwards, the struggle for the establishment of the college continued.
